About Mental Health

Defined as a person’s mental state with regard to their psychological, emotional, and social well-being. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021)

Mental health is a growing issue within society today and one of the many major factors that affect an individual’s everyday life. About 1 out of 5 adults in the U.S suffer from a mental illness with conditions ranging from mild to moderate to severe. Approximately, that’s 52.9 million adults affected, in 2020 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). Mental health affects individuals of all ages and genders, but is primarily seen in adolescent girls (ages ranging from 3-18 years old). It is seen that about one in five children worldwide experience mental health problems (Bor et al., 2014).

Both externalizing issues and internalizing issues aid in the problem of mental health, but internalizing issues seem to be more prevalent (Bor et al., 2014). Many factors play into the issue of not receiving and staying in necessary treatment for those who struggle with mental health, but the major barriers are not perceiving need for treatment and or attitudinal barriers (Andrade et al., 2014). It was seen that in 2020, out of the 52.9 million adults affected by mental health issues, 46.2% (24.3 million) received mental health treatment (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). Conversation about mental health is so important and needs to be addressed worldwide. Allowing these issues to be addressed and less stigmatized can help change individuals’ lives.

Approaches for prevention and early intervention for mental health issues should be looked at and addressed to help those who are people suffering (Bor et al., 2014). Some approaches to prevention and early intervention can include sleep, nutrition, exercise, and seeking help/ treatment. To read more about some effectors of mental health click the link below.
